LONDON, UK – The awards season will soon be upon us, as the most prestigious honours in the coffee industry are once again presented at the SCAE’s 2014 Event, World of Coffee, Rimini in June.

The hotly contested Awards for Coffee Excellence go to individuals, companies, organisations or groups that have been nominated by SCAE members all over the world. Nominations are now open for the following categories:

Young Entrepreneur

Enthusiastic member of the coffee industry, preferably under 35 years old. Shows drive to persevere in his field to be successful in the trade.  Being young, both in age and in heart and realising a dream.

Working towards Sustainability

This award is presented to a smallholder, estate, cooperative, mill or farm in an origin who is working by adapting farming methods or coffee preparation to improve the environment..

The Innovation Award

Someone who has successfully produced something new to promote the quality of coffee. This could be in the production of drinks, promotion of the product, development of machinery and equipment or any other innovative idea.

The Passionate Educator

Anyone who has made a concerted effort to communicate to others the wonderful pleasure that coffee can bring us.

All communication tools that appeal to our five senses can be used: the spoken, written or printed word, the arts such as photography and painting, or even through music and drama.

Lifetime Achievement

The Test of Time.  An institution or person who has furthered the interests of the industry by promoting the concept of quality coffee in a statesmanlike manner.

The winning person or organisation who is recognised for their experience and knowledge of the trade, having their focus on the promotion of quality.

SCAE’s Awards for Excellence celebrate the individuals, companies and organisations that work diligently to raise standards in the coffee industry.

The Awards that we give try to acknowledge people in different parts of the industry who work towards our aims for better quality in culture, production and presentation. Nominated by members, and this year the voting will be done by members, we try to acknowledge the effort made by individuals or groups.

The awards, for Young Entrepreneur, Working Towards Sustainability, Innovation, The Passionate Educator and Lifetime Achievement, will be presented during the World of Coffee this June.

Over the years winners of the awards have been coffee shops and individuals who have incorporated novel ideas to promote their business, with the emphasis on the quality of the coffee.

In another category we have acknowledged individuals who have given their time to educate others in coffee technology… some who spend much of their free time inspiring others to enjoy the benefits of a well-produced cup.

The producer has not been forgotten, at origin farmers are experimenting all the time with methods to improve the crop, the mill is trying new ways of preparing the bean and others look at the storage of the parchment before export.

The award for Lifetime Achievement has been running since 2005 and shows our appreciation for an individual who has dedicated much of his life to the promotion of quality.

All SCAE members are asked to nominate individuals and organisations in all five of these categories by April 30th, and the nominees do not have to be SCAE members.

The awards are not just for individuals, but also for companies and associations.

To make a nomination, just email Colin Smith ( colin@smiths-coffee.demon.co.uk) on the IDC Committee with the following details: the name, business name, address, telephone number and email address of the nominee, and a brief explanation (in 50 to 100 words) of the reason for the nomination.

A photo of the nominee(s) would be useful as well, but is not necessary. Finally, the nominating SCAE member’s name is also required, although this will not be published.

Please put “Awards Nomination” in the subject line of your email when you send your nomination(s).(You can see all of the previous award winners here)
