The founder: "The price of our coffee varies from € 1.5 to € 3.5 depending on the type: whether it is with normal milk, oat milk or ice. We only use special coffee machines: we have several but always the best ones for the best results in cup, like Victoria Arduino Eagle One, La Marzocco and Nuova Simonelli"

MADRID – Coffee unites people, cultures and even different activities: we came across a concrete example of a youth enterprise that starts from Spain, where a group of young people have put together a concept that links the coffee ritual with another newspaper, that is, reading the newspaper. A little vintage is the idea of reviving newsstands by transforming them into hybrid cafes, where the two souls live together every day: we talked about it with the two founders, Pablo and Davide. First of all, can you tell us what News and Coffee are: how was it born and what are its goals?

“News and Coffee is a new kiosk concept” Pablo started to tell

And then he continues: “A way to make this small place so important to live in the daily life of each neighborhood. But this time with curated magazines and special takeaway coffees. News and Coffee is a personal project undertaken together with my partners, but my work it goes further, and is to help people build their own project to be successful.

I have been working in the hospitality sector for years and from these premises I conceived a new concept: in 2017, when I saw our first kiosk closed at Paseo Sant Joan, I started developing what we know today as News and Coffee with the support of my partners Davide and Gautier. The real change came when Yael took care of sorting and curating the Magazine – that’s when we went from 0 to 100 very quickly.

Our goals? Try to keep as many kiosks open as possible and broaden the concept. ”

The combination of newspaper and coffee reminds me of an Italian tradition (today the price of espresso is still 1 euro as newspapers used to cost): is there the same constraint in Spain?

“Espresso doesn’t cost 1 euro here, but something more: € 1.5, which is a very popular price but also respectful of quality. Newspapers also cost € 1.5 on weekdays.”

How does News and Coffee work?

“News and Coffee is a newsstand that serves good coffee to go, so it’s not really a coffee shop. We always want to explain this part of the concept very well: we actually sell more magazines than coffee.

And the coffee? What do you serve?

“We use a single origin Guatemala for espresso and Ethiopia for filter (made by Moccamaster)”

How much? What coffee machine do you use and how is it connected to the water supply?

“The price of our coffee varies from € 1.5 to € 3.5 depending on the type: whether it is with normal milk, oat milk or ice. We only use special coffee machines: we have several but always the best ones for the best results in cup, like Victoria Arduino Eagle One, La Marzocco and Nuova Simonelli.

We have invented our own system for water, but it is top secret.

We hope to be able to grow and see more News and Coffee around the world, who knows maybe one day in Italy too. It’s always about finding the people and partners who want to take our message to their parts of the world. ”
