The Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands – Vietnams’s main coffee area – ships its coffee to more than 60 countries or territories around the world, report local media.

According to the provincial People’s Committee, exports to most markets remain stable, with major customers being Germany, Japan, Italy, the US, Spain, the Republic of Korea , Switzerland, France and Russia .

Exports to 31 countries have a value in excess of US$1 million. Shipments to nine of these countries were worth more than US$10 million each.

Since early this year, more than 138,000 tonnes of coffee beans have been shipped abroad, representing an increase of 9.2% over the same period last year.

Dak Lak boasts the country’s largest coffee growing area with over 200,000 ha, making up 30 percent of the nation’s coffee land and producing up to 400,000 tonnes of beans annually.

To stabilise the market, export businesses have teamed up with farmers to produce better coffee, meeting the increasing demand for high-quality products of global importers.

Currently, more than 41,000 farmers plant coffee on nearly 61,460 hectares to produce around 271,150 tonnes of high-quality coffee beans annually, in compliance with certificate guidelines, such as the Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C), the Rainforest Alliance (RFA), Fairtrade, and UTZ Certified.

A certificate of geographical indication (GI) for the Buon Ma Thuot coffee trademark in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak has also helped increase the value of coffee beans shipped abroad, according to the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association .

As many as 10 coffee producers in the province are entitled to use the GI. They are managing a combined coffee growing area of 15,067 ha, yielding around 46,620 tonnes of coffee beans annually. Sources: Vietnam Economy News, Vietnam Breaking News
