The government of El Salvador has recently announced a major replanting scheme for the coffee sector.
A plan has started which includes the distribution of six million coffee plants as part of a recovery strategy for the sector after the attack of the coffee leaf rust last year.
The Ministry of Agriculture informed that these six million plants may represent some 2,000 or 3,000 hectares of re-stocking of coffee in the country and they will start to distribute them from 2015.
Orestes Ortez, head of the ministry, said that “we are already working on preparing the nurseries and then will begin with the delivery of the plants, which he said will be a rust-resistant variety.”
He said they have already given guidance to extension specialists from the National Center for Agricultural and Forestry Technology (CENTA) to raise farmer’s standards.
