MILAN – International Coffee Day 2022, an event created for 1 October since 2014 by the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), is now just a short time away. Its members and partners for this latest edition have coordinated following a common goal: to lead the sector in its evolution from a linear to a circular economy. Some countries also celebrate their National Coffee Day on specific dates. For example, the US, Canada and a number of producing countries, including India and Ethiopia, observe the National Coffee Day on September 29th.
International Coffee Day: United in celebrating farmers of all origins
And thus in support of those who act daily to provide the three billion cups for coffeelovers around the globe.
International Coffee Day, this 2022, therefore wants to emphasise how the process of transforming the waste produced along the supply chain into new products and alternative energy options can be seen as an opportunity, not only in terms of income but also in terms of employment, as well as helping to reduce production costs.
The ICO has declared its commitment ‘To the prosperity of coffee farmers to reduce the impact of the coffee industry on the environment and mitigate climate change
As the only international organisation that brings together coffee exporting and importing governments, the ICO builds effective global partnerships, guided by the primary mission of developing an industry that is sustainable and resilient, ensuring prosperity for farming communities around the world.
Coffee production and consumption help generate jobs and income in over 60 producing countries and for millions of people around the world engaged in the industry.
Innovative, circular solutions for the global value chain will promote economic, social and environmental sustainability from seed to cup, from farmers to baristas, and from producers to consumers.”
And so closes the ICO on International Coffee Day: “Current ways of doing business are not a sufficient strategy to ensure long-term economic sustainability. On the contrary, systemic change is needed”.
