Bialetti and coffee roasting, a love affair that began in 2000 and quickly became a success

Over the years, the company has also been committed to investments aimed at saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020, the Energy Data Management platform was installed at the Coccaglio site, in collaboration with Vodafone Italia: a monitoring solution for energy management, thanks to which it is possible to monitor consumption in real time, taking action in the event of any losses or dispersions and implementing optimization actions in the use of the resource. It has been estimated that this initiative can help the company save between 5% and 7% of current energy consumption levels

 Coffee roasting

The Bialetti roasting business has been a great challenge for the company, which has developed it in stages (through small, careful steps) in order to offer the best possible product.

The period between 2007 and 2010 was characterized by a phase of experimentation, study, research and training, which led to the launch in 2010 of the I Caffè d’Italia espresso machine capsules, a product that marked Bialetti’s entry into this world of coffee.

The Bialetti method

In addition to the innovative machinery used, the attention paid to staff training, and an ongoing effort to improve in technical performance, Bialetti coffee originates from passion and care, combined with a 100-year legacy of knowledge of the world of coffee. Today, Bialetti is able to handle all stages of roasting in-house:

  • the selection of beans, purchased directly from green coffee producers;
  • the creation of blends to produce different tastes;
  • roasting, which is traditional and artisanal with a long and controlled duration to allow the full aromatic spectrum of the coffee origins to emerge – at this stage, the coffee loses moisture and therefore weight, but increases considerably in volume;
  • degassing, a process necessary for the coffee to achieve the correct level of carbon dioxide;
  • grinding;
  • final packaging.

The company thus created a specific and unique method: the Bialetti Method. The blends stand out for their quality and taste, for the close attention when choosing the best beans, and for the care paid to every detail in the various processing stages. The product range from Bialetti’s roasting business includes coffee capsules, ground coffee, and coffee beans.

Bialetti capsules – I Caffè d’Italia

 The I Caffè d’Italia capsules are the result of a careful study of Italians’ different preferences and tastes, a sensorial journey through the excellence of the Italian espresso that reaches Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome, Naples, and Palermo.

Based on the geographical area and the cultural and customary influences reflected in the coffee ritual, Bialetti has created a range of blends capable of responding to different consumer needs.

The aluminum capsules are designed to best preserve the coffee’s aroma by protecting it from the action of oxygen, light and moisture. They contain 7 grams of coffee, the ideal quantity identified by Bialetti for making an espresso that tastes just like that at the bar.

The choice of aluminum considers both quality and sustainability, because:

  • it is recyclable, countless times;
  • it preserves its characteristics intact, no matter how many times it is reused;
  • it requires up to 95% less energy for its recycling than is used producing the metal.

Perfetto Moka

Thanks to the experience and know-how gained in coffee making, in 2021 Bialetti created Perfetto Moka, ground coffee designed specifically for Moka use, in which the expert combination of roasting and grinding creates the perfect balance for coffee with a unique and unmistakable taste.

The roasting is slow and controlled, while the grinding is carefully studied and calibrated: the specific size of the coffee powder is what guarantees a full-bodied cup of coffee, creamy with aromatic intensity.

Perfetto Moka is available in a range of 7 blends – Classico, Intenso, Delicato, Deka, Cioccolato, Nocciola, Vaniglia – alongside additional limited editions that the company produces for special occasions.

Esperto Grani

 Completing Bialetti’s coffee product range is Esperto Grani, also designed for automatic machines and perfect for those who like to experiment and create their own blends.

It is a product that favors beans grown in tropical areas at high altitudes where, thanks to the high temperature ranges, the coffee has a slower maturation time and develops a characteristic, refined and elegant aroma.

 Some figures about the roasting business

  • 6,000 square meters of space dedicated to coffee production
  • Annual production capacity of:
    • more than 200 million capsules
    • 5 million bags of coffee (ground and beans)

A sustainable vision

Respect for the environment is lodged in Bialetti’s dna, and the brand’s own history is one of ante-litteram sustainability.

Moka Express

When the Moka Express was invented in 1933, environmental issues had not yet emerged but today, 90 years later, the Moka is confirmed as one of the most sustainable ways of making coffee. This is because the Moka is made of aluminum – a material that can be recycled countless times – its use produces no waste, with the exception of compostable coffee grounds, and no detergents are needed to wash it, only warm water.

The company did not stop there, however, and today Bialetti’s vision is expressed through a philosophy geared toward the pursuit of sustainable business development in economic, social and environmental terms, which manifests in a multifaceted, multi-level commitment:

  • operating primarily in accordance with the national and local regulations of the individual countries where the company is present;
  • through product and process choices aimed at optimizing the impact on the ecosystem, even going beyond legislative requirements. The company is constantly engaged in research and development to promote sustainability, both in terms of production activities and in the use and consumption of products.
  1. Focus on the product and the production process

Bialetti is constantly striving toward the improvement of products and the production process. The company is implementing a review of its processes and supply chain with the aim of making the entire organization more aware of environmental and sustainability issues.

Product achievements include:

  • The design of a capsule separator that allows spent capsules to be properly recycled;
  • The removal of every plastic component from all Moka Express packs, which have been completely made of FSC-certified recycled paper since 2020;
  • The creation of Gioia Responsible (2022), made with 50% recycled plastics and with a packaging made of 100% FSC-certified recycled paper;
  • A new layout, from 2022, for all marketed product packs with the aim of giving users all the necessary information for proper disposal of each part.

It has been estimated that this initiative can help the company save between 5% and 7% of current energy consumption levels.

In addition, in December 2023, Bialetti will obtain the ISO 14001 certification, which is the regulatory benchmark for companies with an Environmental Management System.

  1. Sustainability: collaborations

 Bialetti’s focus on sustainability is also evident in its active collaboration with entities devoted to safeguarding the planet.

  • Between 2020 and 2022, the company supported Oceana, an organization committed to protecting the oceans, with the #wakeupfortheoceans campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the serious problem of plastics in the seas.
  • In March 2023, Bialetti signed a two-year partnership with WWF Italia that sees the company at the forefront to support “Orso 2×50”. This project was launched to save from extinction the Marsican Brown Bear, a unique subspecies in the world found only in a few areas of the Central Apennines between Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, and of which only between 50 and 55 specimens remain today.
