MILAN – IBGE further revised downward its estimate for Brazil’s 2015 crop.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics said in its latest monthly report that the country is expected to produce 42.7 million bags of coffee as compared to a previous forecast of to 43.9 million bags.

The Arabica crop is expected to reach 31.5 million bags down 2.1 percent from an estimate of 32.2 million bags.

Rains in early 2015 were shy of historical averages. Heat and a lack of moisture have taken their toll on the development of the crop.

Robusta production is pegged at 11.2 million bags or a 4.4 percent downward correction from a previous estimate.

Coffee production in Espirito Santo, Brazil’s biggest producer of the Robusta variety, is estimated at 7.6 million bags, or a 6.3 percent reduction over the previous forecast.
