Coffee prices surged to 38,200 dong ($1.73-$1.78) per kg on Tuesday in Daklak, strongly up from 36,000 dong on Monday, but still below a range of 38,700-39,100 dong recorded last week.

Prices stood at 41,000-41,300 dong per kg at the same time last March. Overall trading is very slow, according to local sources.

In other news, more than 4,000 hectares (nearly 10,000 acres) of coffee in the provinces of Daklak, Lam Dong and Kontum are suffering from water shortages, reports the Nhan Dan newspaper.

The dry season is at its peak in the Central Highlands region. “The dry weather now is very normal,” a trader in Ho Chi Minh City said in an interview with Reuters. “Dryness may emerge in coming weeks as water levels now are already low.”
