LONDON, United Kingdom – Over the last 8 years Well Grounded supported over 500 people to access careers in coffee. They witness, in just a few weeks, a passion and love for coffee ignite. However, they noticed that many of their graduates consider leaving the industry within two years. As part of their progression and Change Initiative they commissioned a piece of research to review the motivators, barriers and opportunities for progression in specialty coffee.

Motivators to join the industry: For those that stay in the industry for more than 2 years, their primary motivator to join was a love of coffee.

Early leavers: 68% of respondents left coffee within 2 years.

Barriers: Individuals identify the top barriers to progression as pay, lack of structured career paths, skills and training, and an unclear understanding of career opportunities.

Progression: 70% of respondents would like to progress their careers in coffee.

Solutions: Best practice exists but employers and employees want more structured and unstructured training and development pathways.

Recommendations: Training, development and career pathways, a focus on inclusion, collaboration and further research.
Thier sold-out event, The Future of Coffee: People, Progression & Retention was held at The RSA London.
It was a morning of insightful discussions around what it’s really like to work in specialty coffee, alongside ideas and opportunities for empowering progress. They also launched their new research and shared the power of data to inform retention and progression.
Well Grounded: “With 68% of coffee professionals leaving the industry within two years, but 70% stating they want to progress, it is vitally important we understand why people are leaving and put in place the right progression pathways for people to stay and thrive.”
