VEVEY, Switzerland – Nespresso has reached a significant milestone in its Net-Zero climate journey, with the approval of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This endorsement encompasses Nespresso’s Near-Term, Net-Zero, and FLAG targets, confirming the company’s alignment with SBTi’s rigorous Net-Zero Standard Criteria and Near-Term Target Criteria and Recommendations.

This external recognition of Nespresso’s reduction targets, in line with the Paris Agreement and the crucial 1.5-degree Celsius trajectory, underscores its commitment to mitigating the severe impacts of climate change. With this Nespresso is also joining a movement of companies and countries working towards the same goal.

Nespresso’s climate roadmap includes the implementation of regenerative agriculture at scale, innovative products and systems, and enhanced energy efficiency.

Nespresso’s Path to Net Zero

Goals & Milestones:
Both our near-term and net-zero targets to reduce GHG emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3, including Forestry, Land and Agriculture (FLAG), have been fully validated by the SBTi in 2024.

  1. Near-Term target:
    • Energy & Industry: By 2030, Nespresso plans to cut its GHG emissions by 50% compared to its 2018 baseline, in accordance with SBTi standards (Scope 1 & 2 and Scope3 Non-FLAG GHG emissions)
    • FLAG¹ (Forest, Land and Agriculture) target: By 2030 Nespresso commits to reduce scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions by 75% (vs the 2018 baseline) in accordance with SBTi standards. For Nespresso this mainly includes the green coffee production.
  2. Net-Zero target: Committed to achieving Net-Zero GHG emissions by 2050 in accordance with SBTi standards across all our scopes, including FLAG emissions.

Acceleration Ambition: On top of the SBTi validated targets above we are also seeking for ways to accelerate to achieve the Net-Zero target as early as 2035.

Nespresso’s Three Levers of Action

  1. Accelerating the Transition to Regenerative Agriculture: The biggest driver of GHG emissions is green coffee supply – from coffee cultivation on farms to cherry processing. Building on 20 years of direct farmer relationships through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Qualityâ„¢ Program, we are accelerating their transition to regenerative agriculture, while improving their prosperity and resilience. Nespresso’s FLAG path includes activities that aim to reduce cumulative emissions into the atmosphere, while at the same time enhancing carbon sinks to limit global warming to 1.5 -degree Celsius.
  2. Innovation and Renovation in Products, Systems, and Markets: We plan to close the gap by investigating circular innovations with our suppliers, monitoring progress, and making meaningful reductions as we learn.
  3. Optimization of Energy and Logistics: We are taking definitive action to increase efficiency and the use of renewable energy across our operations and are exploring lower-carbon fuel options.

“The approval by the SBTi is a testament to Nespresso’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and climate action,” said Jerome Perez, Head of Sustainability at Nespresso. “We are dedicated to not only meeting but exceeding these targets to work for a healthier planet for future generations. Through innovative practices and continuous improvement, we aim to lead the coffee industry towards a more sustainable future.”

About the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. We develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest. The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
