KAMPALA – On 20-21st August 2013 at Serena Hotel in Kampala, UCDA hosted Prof. David Nini from Israel who engaged coffee stakeholders and medical professionals on the benefits of drinking coffee with proven scientific references.
In his opening remarks, the UCDA Quality and Regulator Manager, Mr. Edmund Kananura hinted on the importance of drinking coffee and highlighted UCDA’s interventions towards increasing domestic coffee consumption.
He reiterated that this two-day sensitization and awareness session is one of the major drivers as medical professionals, once they appreciate the health benefits of drinking coffee, will change the public’s perception towards consumption of the beverage as it was witnessed in Brazil.
The MD UCDA, Mr. Henry Ngabirano re-echoed on the health benefits of drinking coffee and hinted that it was profitable if Ugandans engaged in the higher end of the coffee value chain (roasting and cafes/coffee shops).
He hoped that at the end of the awareness seminar, participants would go back with proven medical research findings associated with coffee drinking.
Prof. Nini emphasized that although in the past coffee drinking had been associated with a number of diseases, recent research findings had indicated that drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day is healthy for an individual.
Prof. Nini enumerated the positive correlation between coffee drinking and reduction in Type 2 diabetes, , healthParkinson’s disease, Alzheimer disease as well as its attributes as an antioxidant which stimulates the brain and mind.
At the end of the session, participants requested UCDA to provide more awareness seminars especially to the medical professionals.
