NEW YORK, U.S. – Olam Americas Coffee Marketing Office, based in New York and home to both Olam’s commercial and specialty divisions, has ventured into an exciting new development with the opening of a Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) – certified coffee cupping lab on their premises.

The opening of the lab in Purchase, just 40 minutes outside of Manhattan, now makes Olam Americas Coffee the only SCAA-certified “teaching campus” in the greater New York area.

The lab boasts all the necessary equipment needed to thoroughly analyse, roast, and cup the best quality coffee; including scales, colour sensors, moisture sensors, roasters and grinders.

The lab also gives Olam the opportunity to host a number of coffee industry events that will also serve to promote Olam Americas Coffee.

Just last month, The Rainforest Alliance Cupping for Quality was hosted at the lab. Since 2003, the Rainforest Alliance has organised coffee cuppings to create an opportunity for Rainforest Alliance Certified™ coffees to undergo systematic evaluation by a group of industry experts.

The goal of the Rainforest Alliance Cupping for Quality is to show the link between best social, ecological and economic sustainability practices and quality in the cup. Cuppings take place twice each year according to various coffee harvest cycles – once during the springtime, and once in December to evaluate coffees from origins worldwide.

Five representatives from The Rainforest Alliance ran the event at the beginning of the month, and 15 attendees ranging from roasters to buyers and traders attended. The unveiling of the new facility was a huge success and the lab will host many more coffee industry events in the months to come.
