Provinces in the Central Highlands, Vetnam’s main coffee region, plan to harvest more than 1 million tonnes of coffee (16.6 million bagas) in the 2013-2014 crop, report local media.

Planted areas in the region total almost 552,000 hectares of coffee, according to the Central Highlands Steering Committee.

The Dak Lak province alone has 202,00 ha of coffee and a production of 450,000 tonnes of beans.

Vietnam had more than 622,000 ha of coffee with an average yield of 2.35 tonnes per hectare at the end of last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The country has an estimated 86,000 ha of coffee plants that are more than 20 years old.

Vietnam exported 63,550 tonnes (1.06 million bags) of coffee in September, 9.7% down from a year ago, Vietnam Customs said on Tuesday.

In other news, Starbucks opened its third outlet in HCM City on Wednesday.

Starbucks continues to grow in Vietnam and plans to go to the north next year, said Patricia Marques, general manager of Coffee Concept Viet Nam, which brought the US giant to the country, speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration.
