In consideration of the strategic vision of the company the
IL MARZOCCO D’ORO – the student scholarship, is for students (the sons and daughters of company employees) attending middle or high (secondary) school.
Wednesday 26th October, at the company headquarters in Scarperia, five students, Aldo Salierno, Lorenzo Toscani, Nora Labiad, Federica Cortopassi and Maria Novella Valenti received IL MARZOCCO D’ORO. Each student from the 2015/2016 academic year was awarded a scholarship of 1,200 Euro.
Two boys and three girls who, according to their replies below, between dreams and wishes, truly represent LA MARZOCCO’s style and mission.
Commitment, excellence, the desire to travel, to discover new worlds and new cultures, art, music, to join others they aim to create a community with shared values and relationships.

ALDO SALIERNO, 14, first year of high school, Classical studies
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
I don’t know if I want to be a doctor, engineer or lawyer but I do know for certain that I want to work closely with people, to have the possibility to know other cultures.
- The dream you would like to see come true?
My dream is to build a new family with the same values and feelings with which I find myself living today.
- The trip you would like to take?
I would like to return to America out of personal interests and to visit the big cities, but also the America that is “less known” during the Christmas holidays and Halloween. I hope that this can help to feel more American.
- The gift you would like to give a friend?
The gift that I would like to give one of my friends, and one I hope to succeed at, is to assure them of their unshakeable faith in my loyalty.
LORENZO TOSCANI, 17, High School, Hospitality and Catering
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
I would like to become a nutritionist. I also like all of the occupations related to the school I have chosen.
- The dream you would like to see come true?
My dream would be to be successful at carrying out everything that I like.
- The trip you would like to take?
There isn’t one specific trip I would like to take. I really like the mountains, but I also like places that are warm.
- The gift you would like to give a friend?
Two airline tickets, one for me and one for my friend.
NORA LABIAD, 16, High School, Languages
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
My biggest dream has always been to become a flight attendant. In fact, having always loved languages and dreamt of travelling the world, I think it would be my ideal job. On the other hand, I would simply like to use my languages in a quiet job, working at the office in a company, for example. I am still undecided about what job I would like to do, but one thing is certain: the languages I am studying will definitely be used. I believe that it all depends on the possibilities that life will offer me in the future.
- The dream you would like to see come true?
My desire is connected to the thing I love most: travelling. I want to visit a lot of countries and learn their habits and customs, their language and culture, to then find myself, at a certain age, lying in the sun in Hawaii. I know that it is quite an ambitious desire, but it has always been a dream and a goal to achieve.
- The trip you would like to take?
My perfect trip would include all the countries which speak the languages I am studying: English, French, German and Chinese, with the aim of improving them by immersing myself in their respective cultures. Of all the places that fascinate me, China is the one that intrigues me the most because of its particular culture.
- The gift you would like to give a friend?
Depending on the occasion and what the person in question likes, the gift would vary. For example, a gift I would like to give a friend who really enjoys reading would be an entire saga of books, a gift I would like as well. I think you simply need to know a person’s tastes to give a good gift, and see yourself in them to better understand if the gift will be appreciated or not.
FEDERICA CORTOPASSI, 17, High School, Scientific studies
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
“What do you want to do when you grow up?” is the question everyone asks me, teachers, friends, relatives and parents, and I have only ever given one response, ‘A surgeon!’.
“But what do you like about cutting people up?” I always find myself giving the same answer, as if this profession could be compared to that of a butcher. “Well, I would like to inform you that surgeons do not ‘cut’, they ‘open’; surgeons do not ‘tear off’, they ‘amputate’. Perhaps this is the real attraction of the profession, saving people about who you know nothing, only because you know you are doing the right thing without consideration of race, sex or religion; yes, this is the characteristic which intrigues me most about being a surgeon.
- The dream you would like to see come true?
My dream is to travel the world with the person who is dearest to me whether it be a boy, a friend, a brother or sister, or by myself. I would like to be able to discover the “real life” of several countries, not what is shown on TV, but to understand their habits, learn their language, their customs and way of life.
- The trip you would like to take?
In truth, more than a specific place, I would like to visit the Far East, but if I really had to choose one country, I would say Japan. Perhaps, because a few friends who have been there have spoken highly of it, because of how much emphasis my geography teacher gave it when she explained this country, the traditions which are so different to ours, and the fact that Japan really fascinates me as a tourist destination and is among the possible regions for my high school trip.
- The gift you would like to give a friend?
As a gift for a friend, I would definitely give a book, seeing that everyone knows my passion for literature and the effort I spend trying to encourage people close to me to read, because you know, reading is like travelling while sitting comfortably on the sofa.
MARIA NOVELLA VALENTI, 18, High School, Classical studies
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
My future is approaching quickly: I am in the last year of high school and in a few months I will have to choose the path that will lead me to what I want to do when I am an adult. About that, I have a fairly clear idea. Since I am really fascinated by everything related to the human mind, I’m going to study psychology, specifically clinical criminology, the branch which studies the psychosocial aspects of crime. To unravel the hidden secrets of a the mind, to uncover the plots of a crime and work in the area of criminal rehabilitation are some of the activities I would like to try my hand when I enter the professional environment.
- The dream you would like to see come true?
I also have a secret wish, though I have high hopes of being able to achieve it sooner or later: I would like to open a restaurant. I would like my establishment to focus on culinary peculiarities, concentrating on quality and, at the same time on some particular feature: a place where only dinners with a theme are organised, such as a dinner for singles only, a dinner for motorcycle enthusiasts, a dinner for film lovers and, for each of these situations, invent menus related to the theme of the evening. And don’t worry, I will organise one for coffee lovers, too.
- The trip you would like to take?
John Steinbeck, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962, in one of his aphorisms said, “People don’t take trips, trips take people” Every trip shapes us, enriches us, changes our outlook, our way of thinking, our expectations. And the journey, that of life, the one I have dreamed of since I was small, would be to travel to a third world country to give them my assistance, live among the local people, play with the children, speak with their wives and live like they live. I would like to learn from things we seem to have forgotten, which is how to appreciate the little things without being overwhelmed by the frenzy which surrounds our daily life. I would like to take a trip to a place where human values take the place of economic value.
- The gift you would like to give a friend?
I love gifts which are really personal or personalised so, I might choose different types of gifts depending on the situation: a photo album that tells the life of our friendship, a ticket so we can go to the concert, such as Coldplay, a trip to a spa, a photography course, a canvas painting of my friend and I.
