BICKNACRE, UK – Last week Coffee Kids announced that they managed to reach their goal of raising $30,000 for their ‘Grow it Forward’ campaign to help Coffee-farming families throughout Latin America. The money raised will go towards contributing to projects that secure long-term food security for coffee-farming families.

Having agreed earlier this year to contribute to Coffee Kids 1 Euro for every Coffee Diploma Certificate issued. SCAE has offered to divert this contribution to the Grow It Forward campaign.

This figure stands at an incredible 7,000 certificates across our 5 modules!

Therefore we are more than happy to donate this amount towards the ‘Grow It Forward’ as the association strongly supports the campaign and the work Coffee Kids provides to coffee-farming families in South America.

Coffee Kids and the SCAE agree that a sustainable coffee future must start with sustainable, healthy communities. Quality coffee begins with quality of life. That is why the SCAE has taken on a Strategic Partnership with Coffee Kids and agreed to give €1 to food security projects for each Diploma System inscription.

The SCAE Coffee Diploma is a controlled and certified system with a curriculum written and updated by the best minds in the coffee industry. You can find out more about it here: http://www.scae.com/education/scae-coffee-diploma.html

In much of Central America, the coffee harvest ends around the end of February.

Three months later, most families have spent what they earned and must find a way to feed their families for the remainder of the year. Coffee-farming families face three to eight months of hunger every year.

These months are referred to as the hungry months.

SCAE Executive Director David Veal comments on the success of the campaign and what it means for the specialty coffee industry.

“We in the consuming countries are often unaware of the problems and challenges facing our colleagues in producing countries. So we feel it is really important not only to support this campaign thoroughly, but also to help raise awareness of this issue.”

“This year’s contribution to GROW from SCAE really put us over the top – we wouldn’t have achieved our goal without their support,” said Coffee Kids Development Director, Elisa Kelly.

“We love having SCAE as a strategic partner, and their work on behalf of coffee farming families by working with Coffee Kids completes the coffee circle in a really meaningful way.

We are looking forward to further collaboration in 2014 and look forward to keeping members posted about the impact that SCAE’s support helps us achieve.”

Coffee Kids projects that establish family gardens, worm-composting sites and provide nutritional workshops help families ensure an adequate supply of fresh, local food, minimizing the impact of rising global food prices and the lack of income during this time of year.

Coffee Kids and the SCAE recognize the need to work together to better address the issues that are essential to the long-term sustainability of the specialty coffee industry. Through collaborations such as this, we build stronger coffee communities together.
