Sri Lanka to celebrate the 150 years of its national tea industry in August

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The world’s number 4 tea producer, after China , India and Kenya the island has produced 329,000 metric tonnes of Ceylon Tea in 2015. After more than 150 years of development, the time has come to celebrate this longstanding, important and famous tea production and tea trade and industry.

The Colombo Tea Traders Association (CTTA), the apex body of the Sri Lankan tea trade, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board are setting up a programme of special events throughout the year.

To commemorate the launch of the tea industry the highlight of the various events will be “The Colombo Tea Convention” that will take place from August 8th to 11th 2017 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

While the target audience will include local producers, exporters / suppliers and all other stakeholders involved in the tea industry, the Convention is expected to attract also a large number of foreign delegates.

With many speakers from diverse backgrounds sharing their tea experience and tea market knowledge, the Convention, inter-alia, aims at formulating innovative strategies that will help the tea industry to cope with current and future challenges.

The programme of the convention is summarised in an information flyer, which can be studied on the website, created by the CTTA www.ceylonteaevents.com, which provides detailed information on the convention and related events, such as visits to the tea growing areas:

08th August – Welcome cocktails

09th August – Opening Ceremony and Sessions at BMICH & Presidents Tea Party

10th August – Sessions and Gala Dinner at Cinnamon Grand Hotel

11th August – Sessions at Cinnamon Grand Hotel followed by a Beach Party

At the beginning of the convention week – Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th -the following international tea bodies will convene their membership for  the 12th ITC Producer-Consumer member meeting and the Inter-sessions of the FAO Inter Governmental Group (IGG) on tea, under the auspices of the Sri Lanka Tea Board.
