HEREDIA, Costa Rica – During the Cup of Excellence contest which took place this week in the Bouganvillea Hotel in Heredia, coffee tasters from nine countries chose coffee from Don Antonio farm part of the Group Los Grande de Copey, from the Tarrazú region, as the best in Costa Rica.

Experienced coffee tasters from Japan, South Korea, Australia, Bulgaria, China, Germany, U.S.A., Colombia and Costa Rica tasted coffee from different companies and regions in the event that took place May 23 to the 26.

The Cup of Excellence event is the most prestigious coffee competition and award for high quality coffees.

“The level of scrutiny that Cup of Excellence coffees undergo is unmatched anywhere in the specialty coffee industry.

Each year, thousands of coffees are submitted for consideration, with winning coffees sold in global online auctions at premium prices, with the vast majority of auction proceeds going to the farmers”, explains the Alliance for Coffeee Excellence organization’s site.

The second place was awarded to a lot from Volcan Azul estate from the Central Occidental Valley and the third position went also to coffee from the Tarrazú region, the Don Cayito estate

In total, 29 lots of coffee classified, obtaining scores over 86, and moving on to the next stage of the competition, this involves an electronic auction that will take place June 28th.

Last year’s winner was the lot presented by Francisco Mena in representation of Monte Llano Bonito from Naranjo, Alajuela; this lot sold in the auction for a record price of $5,900.00 the quital (46 kilograms).

This event takes place in Costa Rica since 2007. It takes place in several countries, this year for instance in Brazil, Burundi, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.
