CAPE TOWN, South Africa – The campaign is one that seeks to highlight the power and joy of reading. Learners from across South Africa’s provinces were invited to design their very own coffee sleeve based on the reasons why they love reading.
Illiteracy is a major concern among primary school goers in South Africa, with more than 50% of learners unable to read for meaning by the end of Grade 4, while 29% are completely illiterate.
In under-resourced and overcrowded schools particularly, teachers are unable to provide the individual attention that struggling readers need to master basic literacy concepts in order to become confident, fluent readers.
help2read’s volunteers play a vital role in providing these struggling readers between Grade 2 and Grade 4 with the one-on-one support they desperately need.
In the midst of these nationwide challenges, help2read’s Literacy Tutor programme recognises the power and potential of South Africa’s youth as a significant asset in and for their communities.
The programme trains unemployed youth to provide primary school learners with one-on-one reading help and literacy support in township schools.
To raise awareness, over the course of the next month, Seattle Coffee Company Stores will feature five designs selected from all of the beautiful student artwork submitted
If you visit your local Seattle Coffee store in the next month, you’ll be able to see the final results and stand a chance to win a R100 Seattle Coffee Company voucher in a social media competition.
