Coffee exports from Vietnam for the first eight months of 2018 are seen 14.8% up from last year to 1.3 million tonnes, or 21.78 million 60-kg bags, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported on Wednesday. August coffee exports were estimated at 135,000 tonnes.

However revenue drop 3.1% to US$2.5 billion due to falling global prices, said GSO.

Domestic coffee beans are now traded at VND34,200-34,400 per kilogram, or $1.47-1.48, the lowest since May 2016.

Many farmers have shifted to grow durian and fruit trees, which can bring higher value. However, as requested by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the coffee sector will maintain a stable coffee growing area of 600,000 hectares.

Coffee is one of the key export items of Vietnam, which brings $3 billion a year.
