HAMBURG, Germany – Only one day to go until Hamburg shines as Europe’s most important hub for handling coffee, tea and cocoa. COTECA Coffee, Tea, Cocoa Global Industry Expo will be held from 10 to 12 October 2018 for international trade visitors.

Some 200 exhibitors will be there from 40 nations, including coffee growing countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Indonesia, Peru, Nepal and El Salvador; they will present their innovative products and solutions for trade and industry, and highlight the whole of the value chain.

Coffee trends and professional coffee cuppings

Coffee is the number one beverage in Germany, with favourites including Cold Brew, Nitro, Pink Latte, Mushroom Coffee, Vietnamese Espresso with egg, and classic filter coffee. Germans consume an average of 162 litres of this hot beverage every year[1].

COTECA visitors can attend presentations and workshops giving information on consumer preferences, on general developments in the market, and on what that all means for the trade. And they can find out all about the latest techniques and technologies.

There is also plenty to taste – the Kaffee Campus of the German Roasters Guild provides sensory analysis of a wide range of coffees by an international panel, in the course of professional coffee cuppings.

Sustainability moving forward

Every hour, 320,000 disposable coffee cups are used in Germany[2], creating a vast amount of “To-Go Trash”. A promising trend is gathering speed in cafés and canteens, to combat the flood of plastic – that is reusable cups with a deposit system.

The young company RECUP is right at the forefront of this trend, and was chosen in spring as a partner for the City of Hamburg.

Futurama is another prominent exhibitor at COTECA, as a producer of compostable packaging films from renewable raw materials – they are being used increasingly in catering, too, alongside conventional packaging materials.

This and related subjects such as plastic-free packaging of beverages will be explained and discussed by selected exhibitors and experts at Speakers’ Corner.

Megatrend tea – sweet and savoury

Tea is always on target – we drink an average of 27.5 litres of black tea and green tea per annum[3]. Leading tea traders, producers and service providers will be present at COTECA, presenting new products and international tea trends.

The versatility of tea, and some exotic forms of consumption, are shown by “Mrs T”, Maren Thobaben. She uses tea as a spice, as an essence and as a decoration, in sweet and savoury variants. The expo will also include workshops on preparation of products such as matcha with a bowl and bamboo whisk. Visitors can also see innovative accessories, get production know-how, and watch tea ceremonies and tea tastings.

From growing to trade, processing and blending, right up to the final product, plus technologies and services – COTECA is the only trade show in Europe to cover the whole value chain for the three industries coffee, tea and cocoa, all under one roof. This is the ideal networking platform in Europe.
