It’s official – The UK is a nation of coffee lovers with 62% of Britons now brewing and drinking real coffee at home (i.e. coffee made from real coffee beans or ground coffee, as opposed to instant)– and 18% of Britons drinking real coffee at home at least once a day. That’s according to a national study by gourmet online Cuban coffee brand, Alma de Cuba, which also found that when it comes to quaffing a proper cup of coffee, 70% of Brits also enjoy sipping real coffee in a coffee shop.

When it comes to deciding where to enjoy a cup of coffee when out, it looks like independent coffee houses are gaining ground on the well-known global chains, with 38% preferring independents, just beaten by 40% preferring to buy from well-known high street chains.

Twice as many Britons also confirm that their consumption of real coffee has increased (32%) rather than decreased (15%) over the past five years.

Britons are also surprisingly more likely to purchase premium real coffee brands for consumption at home (24%), or mid-range coffee (61%) than the cheapest available brands (9%), perhaps indicating that even during cash-strapped times, a good quality cup of home-brewed coffee at less than 50p a go is considered an affordable luxury.

Yet when it comes to the pour, forget designer cutting edge coffee machines, cafetières (34%) are most likely to be used to make real coffee in the home, with Nespresso-type capsule machines only used by 11%.

Interestingly, it is the men (28%), aged 18-24 who are the ones full of beans and driving the trend for ‘at-home’ premium coffee experiences – clearly with a taste for the right roast!

The study, conducted by ComRes, aimed to explore coffee purchase and consumption, drinking preferences and changes in drinking habits within Great Britain, specifically focusing on coffee made from real coffee beans or ground coffee, also known as ‘real coffee’.
