Coffee exports from Uganda rose by 9.3% in November, reports UCDA

KAMPALA, Uganda — Coffee exports from Uganda in November 2019 amounted to 438,815 60-kilo bags worth US$ 42.19 million says the Uganda Coffee Development Authority in its latest report. This comprised 336,006 bags (US $ 30.38 million) of Robusta and 102,809 bags (US$ 11.82 million) of Arabica.

This was an increase in both quantity and value of 9.31% and 2.60% respectively from the same month last year.

By comparing quantity of coffee exported by type in the same month of last coffee year (November 2018 and 2019), Robusta registered a percentage increase both in quantity and value (15.25%and 8.07%) respectively.

On the other hand Arabica exports registered a percentage decrease in both quantity and value (6.46% and 9.20%) respectively.

Coffee exports for the first five months (Financial year 2019/20) amounted to 2,131,845 60-kilo bags worth US$ 204 million compared to 1,798,044 60-kilo bags worth US$ 182 million the previous year, 18.56% and 12.09% increase in both quantity and value respectively.

The increase in exports was attributed mainly to increased production on account of favourable weather as
well as releasing stocks to fulfil their contractual obligations with buyers abroad, prompted by a rise in global prices.

Robusta exports accounted for 76 57 of total exports compared to 80 03 the previous month The average Robusta price was US 1 51 per kilo, US cents 4 lower than the previous month Washed Robusta fetched the highest price of US 2 12 per kilo, fetching a premium of 46 cents over conventional Screen 18 sold at an average of US 1 66 per kilo Organic Robusta fetched US 2 10 per kilo, a premium of 44 cents over conventional Screen 18.

Arabica fetched an average price of US 1 92 per kilo, Cents 3 lower that in October 2019 The highest price was for Organic Wugar sold at US 3 31 per kilo, a premium price of US cents 95 over Bugisu AA and US 2 36 above conventional Wugar sold at US 2 13 per kilo It was followed by Organic Drugar sold at a unit price of US 2 97 per kilo, a premium of 61 cents over Bugisu AA Drugar exports had a 75 share of Arabica exports.

Exports to Italy had the highest market share with 26.62% (27.98%) It was followed by Germany with 20.48% (14.15%), Sudan 14.86% (22.35%) and Spain 5.86% (3.62%).
