VEVEY, Switzerland – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect lives and livelihoods, young people are struggling. More than one in six young people are out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic while those who remain employed have seen their working hours cut, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO). In this difficult context, Nestlé and 70 partner companies have announced that they have provided over 100’000 development opportunities for young people from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru over the past three years.

That includes training, internships and job opportunities.

The announcement came on the first day of the fifth Pacific Alliance Youth Summit, hosted by Nestlé in Chile. The Summit is taking place virtually for the first time and focuses on tackling the social and economic integration of young people impacted by the pandemic.

The first day of the Summit was marked by the presence of the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, Labor and Education authorities of the Pacific Alliance countries and representatives of the private sector. The Summit discussed youth, employability and the impact of the pandemic. The event emphasized the promotion of the dual education model to close the gap between the skills learned in the academic field and the requirements.

The second day will be dedicated to young people, focusing on employability skills and personal branding development as well as success factors to be competitive in the labor market, with partners such as LinkedIn and Google contributing. Registration is still open at www.jovenes2020.com.
