MILAN – Awarded as one of the Best Products 2023 by the Specialty Coffee Association in Portland, we are talking about Ion Beam, a tool created by the Acaia company founded back in 2013, to solve the age-old problem that all professionals would like to avoid at the time of grinding, namely the generation of static electricity during the grinding process.
The Ion Beam is designed to work mounted on the Acaia Orbit grinder itself, or as a portable accessory for different grinder models.
This tubular tool contains an industrial-grade ion generator inside and enables lower retention, limiting film production and reducing lump formation.
The device achieves this by emitting a constant stream of charged ions that effectively neutralise the build-up of static charges that can occur during grinding.
And that’s not all, because now, Ion Beam has an IR sensor that detects movement so that the moment you place a container near it, the ioniser is automatically activated.
How does it work more technically?
The generator has a built-in infrared sensor that detects the presence of an object placed within 5 cm. So to activate the device, it is sufficient, for example, to place an object such as a dosing cup next to the IR sensor. This function optimises the bean grinding process efficiently and easily.
The emission of positive and negative ions from different ends effectively neutralises static electricity (again, both negative and positive). This results in cleaner and more consistent grinding.
The design of the Ion Beam
Allows it to be used either as a hand-held device or mounted on a standard 1/4-inch tripod. This gives further flexibility of use, with adaptation to different grinders.
At a cost of $165 (€152), the Ion Beam is available on the Acaia shop in three versions (white, black and grey), in the US and in EU here at 191,56.
