Merlo coffee has been named Australia’s favourite coffee for the second year running in the prestigious I Love FOOD Awards.
Foxtel’s LifeStyle FOOD Channel I Love FOOD Awards 2014 were announced on the weekend, and generated just under 100,000 votes, making it the biggest people’s food choice awards in Australia for the year.
Merlo’s Fortitude Valley Torrefazione (the first Merlo roasting house) took out the category for Australia’s Favourite Coffee or Tea for the second consecutive year. It was one of only three titles for Queensland out of a possible 28.
The national award comes on the back of Merlo recently celebrating the christening of their new Brambati Roaster direct from Italy, and their first custom-designed Cupping Room, both in the Bowen Hills Torrefazione (roasting house).
Merlo Coffee Founder Dean Merlo said the win was fantastic for the brand and for Queensland. “This is a major coup for us – winning back to back titles is one thing, however, the fact that this award is the biggest people’s choice in the country brings so much more to the table, we are thrilled and very excited!” he said.
Queensland’s coffee culture has gone from strength to strength since the Merlo family introduced the first espresso machine to Queensland at their Italian restaurant in 1958.
In 1996, Dean Merlo established the Merlo Torrefazione – an Italian style coffee roasting house in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.
It was the beginning of the coffee revolution in Queensland. Merlo Coffee has since grown into one of the country’s leading espresso coffee companies.
