CHARLBURY, Oxon, U.K. – The British Coffee Association (BCA) has just published its first Sustainability Mission statement, outlining the key objectives that it believes will help enable the sector to continue to grow and thrive as a fully sustainable industry, both now and in the future.
This publication is a first-of-its-kind in setting a Sustainability Mission for the UK coffee industry and comes shortly after the creation of the BCA’s Sustainability Committee.
The Committee, co-chaired by Krisztina Szalai from Taylors of Harrogate, and Victoria Moorhouse from Costa Coffee, is working together with representatives across the UK industry to ensure that sustainability sits at the heart of its work.
Central to the BCA’s sustainability mission is the identification of three priority areas. By applying focus across these the BCA hopes that the UK coffee industry can better identify and address sustainability issues across the whole of the supply chain. The priority focus areas include:
- Working towards a circular economy for the UK coffee industry
- Driving responsible sourcing practices that enhance existing standards
- Improving the long-term resilience of coffee farmers at origin
Commenting on the Sustainability Mission Statement, Chris Stemman, Executive Director of the British Coffee Association (BCA), stated: “We are proud of the great progress already made by the UK coffee industry in identifying and acting upon sustainability issues, from bean to bin, and beyond!
We are seeking a renewed focus from all our members to act collaboratively in addressing the specific barriers that we still face and to become a global model of best practice in all key aspects of sustainability.
By defining our collective Sustainability Mission, we aim to create priorities, enhance collaboration, and support all of our individual members in their own efforts to drive sustainability. We must collaborate, more than ever, in order to protect the needs and interests of people and the environment throughout our supply chains.”
