Berlin start up Kaffeeform won the Red Dot design award in 2018 for its innovative use of recyclable coffee grounds to create reusable coffee mugs. Julian Lechner, a German designer, is the brains behind the operation, reports Designboom.

The brand combines used coffee grounds with natural glues and particles of wood to create a new material.

The wood is sourced from sustainable sources, while the coffee grounds come from local Berlin café’s leftovers. Once combined, they create a liquid that can be injection molded to create reusable cups.

“As the global coffee consumption is steadily growing, the coffee grounds that are basically waste, will be available en masse‘, Lechner tells Designboom. ‘Kaffeeform uses this wasted ressources, to creative a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to products based on mineral oils.”
