MILAN – Brazil ’s coffee exports rose sharply in February. According to newly released monthly data from Cecafé, export of all forms of coffee recorded last month a 48.9% increase over year reaching 3,625,986 bags.
According to the Association, results could have been even better Green coffee exports surged by 57.5% to 3,376,346 bags.
Robusta exports recorded a 6 and a half-fold increase (+551.8%) to 570,361 bags. Arabica shipments rose by over a third to 36.5% to 2,805,985 bags.
Sales of processed coffee (mostly soluble) were down by 14.5% to 249,640 bags.
Brazil ‘s coffee exports in Jan-Feb rose to a record 7,654,162 bags, up 44.9% on year. Green coffee exports jumped 52.3% to 7.107.204 bags. Arabica volumes rose by 35% to 6,075,816 bags.
Robusta shipments were up by 531.4% to over one million bags. Sales of processed coffee fell by 11.6% to 546.958.
Jul-Feb exports were also up by 24.3% to 30.688.720 bags. Green coffee exports totalled 28.362.306 bags, or a 27.9% increase over the previous crop year.
Arabica shipments rose by 9.6% to 23,360,819 bags. Robusta exports stood at 5 million bags, up 472%. Sales of processed coffee were down by 7% to a 2,326,414 bags.
Jan-Feb exports to the U.S. and Germany, Brazil’s main market, rose by 37.2% and 57.5%. With a whopping 118.5% increase, Belgium surpassed Italy (+21.7%) to become Brazil’s third market. China has become Brazil’s fifth market behind Japan.
As a result, Antwerp remains the main destination port ahead of Hamburg, Bremen, New Orleans and Genoa.
“As for Robustas, February was the best month on record. Robusta export during the first two month also reached all-time highs” stated the President of Cecafé Márcio Ferreira.
“Brazilian Robustas have more competitive prices than the competition and we have product availability, which allows us make up for the spaces left due the decline in production of Vietnam and Indonesia, the world’s first and third largest producers of the variety” he added.
