Coffee exports from Brazil reverse downward trend

MILAN – Coffee exports from Brazil exports reversed their downward trend in May posting a 5% increase over the same month of 2021. According to the Council of Coffee Exporters of Brazil (Cecafé), the world’s largest producer and exporter of the commodity shipped 2,805,762 bags of all forms of coffee worth $668 million, up 5.1% in volume and 83.1% in value.

Green coffee exports were 5.9% up to 2,528,668 bags, of which 2,407,541 (+15.6%) of Arabica and 121,127 bags (-60.1%) of Robusta. Brazil

Exports of processed coffee were 1.9% down to 277,094 bags, mostly of soluble coffee.

Coffee exports for the first five months of calendar year 2022 are still 7% down in volume from last year to 16,621,375 bags, but up 63% in value to $3.867 billion. Green coffee exports are similarly down by 7.3% to 15,102,186 bags.

Arabica exports recorded a slight decrease (-1.9%) to 14,462,830 bags. Robusta volumes fell sharply (-58.6%) to 639,356 bags. Sales of processed coffee inched down by 3.6% to 1,502,311 bags.

BrazilDuring the January to May period, exports to the US and Germany, Brazil’s main market destinations, fell by 5% and 3.8% respectively. On the other hand, exports to Belgium and Italy were up by 29.6% and 7.2% respectively.

Shipments to Japan went down by 26.1%, while those to Colombia and Spain rose by 7.7% and 24.9%.

Antwerp was the main destination, followed by Hamburg, Bremen, New Orleans and Genova.

According to Günter Häusler, the president of Cecafé, the minor increase in volume exported by Brazil in May allowed the country to moderately mitigate the losses in the 2021/22 season and the calendar year.
