BUDAPEST – There is an over 120-year-old but still shining coffee house in the downtown of the Hungarian capital on the boulevard running past Blaha Lujza tér.  Recently renovated by designer Adam Tihany, it features a dazzling gilded interior with ornate lamps and paintings on the ceiling mixed with contemporary furnishings.

The prestigios café first opened its doors on October 29, 1894. Originally built by the New York Life Insurance Company as a local head office, the building now serves as a hotel and luxury café. New York Kávéház was a center for Hungarian literature and poetry for decades.

The New York Café has lived through many eras, political systems and historical turning points. Still, it has always been reborn, sparkling and occupied by those who longed for its comforts: artists, members of the nobility and commoners alike. The Boscolo Group has reconstructed it in a way which reflects the tendency to regain its old patina and reputation ranking it as the “Most Beautiful Coffee House in the World.”

The halls of the Café New York combines the history the style and the taste of the steamy quality coffee. Found connected to the Boscolo Budapest Hotel, it is now both a café and full-blown restaurant, welcoming locals and tourists who sit at the mirrored tables for traditional Italian and local dishes to the sound of chill-out music and often short performances by local actors.

On ucityguides.com‘s list, Café New York of Budapest is ahead of the worthily famous Café Central of Vienna, Austria or the Parisian Café de la Paix in Paris, France.
