ROME, Italy – On July 22nd the Young Ambassadors Society, Chair of Youth20, the official G20 engagement group for young people, will organise a roundtable in partnership with the International Coffee Organization (ICO), on issues related to sustainability, innovation and inclusion. The meeting, which will take place virtually, foresees a dialogue between the Youth20 delegates and important players of the coffee sector.

The event is sponsored by the Comitato Italiano del Caffè e Consorzio Promozione Caffè, Lavazza, Illy and IMA.

The event will be opened by Fabio Frontani of NKG Bero Italia, who will share what lies behind a cup of coffee.

Subsequently, in the first debate of the day, moderated by Gerardo Patacconi, Director of Operations of ICO, José Sette, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization, will address the topic of opportunities for young people within the coffee supply chain and how this is a model of innovative public-private partnership for economic, social and environmental sustainability.

In the global framework, the Italian coffee industry has a strong potential and plays an important role with its numerous excellences; these are themes that will be touched upon by Mario Cerutti, President of Federazione Italiana Caffè.

The coffee supply chain can also create several opportunities of professional growth for younger generations and a great chance to fulfill the aspirations of young girls and boys through the achievement of an income that generates prosperity: Juan Estèban Orduz, Chair of the World Coffee Producers Forum, will focus on this important issue. Next, Andrea Illy, President of Illycaffè, and Marco Lavazza, vice-president of Lavazza, will talk about the role that the coffee sector plays in addressing the present and future challenges, in particular the ones related to the environment.

The issues of sustainability will also be at the center of the contribution by Alberto Vacchi, IMA SPA Chairman and CEO, who will share concrete examples from the field.

All of these contributions will provide important insights for Y20 delegates who will then have the opportunity to interact with the leaders and experts.

The second session will focus on the theme of inclusion and opportunities for young girls and boys within the coffee production chain. This session will be characterized by the discussion between Y20 delegates and Emanuele Dughera of the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, Bianca Maria Maschio, of the Coffee Quality institute, and the coffee expert Andrej Godina; it will be moderated by Matteo Landi (ICO / FAO-WFF).

The third session will focus on the themes of sustainability and innovation and will see a debate between Gloria Pellegrino, Lavazza research manager, Nicola Panzani, IMA COFFEE Sales Manager and IMA COFFEE PETRONCINI CEO, and Moreno Faina, Director of the University of Coffee. These speakers will discuss with the delegates the role that science and innovation currently play in the coffee supply chain and the role they are expected to play in the future. The debate will be moderated by Christina Archer of Sustainable Food Lab.

Between the various sessions, during the virtual and interactive coffee breaks, Michele Monzini, President of the Coffee Promotion Consortium, and Francesco Sanapo of Specialty Coffee, will share reflections on coffee culture and its promotion.

At the end of the day, a declaration will be produced and it will collect the contributions of all the participants. This declaration will represent an important resource for the continuation of the negotiations among the delegates and for the Y20 final communiqué which will be shared with the G20 leaders.

About the Youth20 (Y20) engagement group

The Youth 20 is one of the official engagement groups of the G20 and was created with the aim of allowing young people to express their visions and ideas to the Heads of State and Government of the G20.

The Y20 communiqué is the result of several months of work done by the delegates and that culminates in the Y20 Summit.

Y20 Italy 2021 is chaired by the Young Ambassadors Society, in collaboration with the G20 Italian Presidency. The Y20 2021 agenda includes three thematic pillars in line with the three macro-areas of the G20 (People, Planet and Prosperity): 1) Innovation, digitization and the future of work; 2) Sustainability, climate and energy; 3) Inclusion and equal opportunities.
