KARLSTAD, Sweden – Four out of five Swedes regularly drink coffee, which makes Sweden one of the world’s most coffee-consuming countries. Hot coffee is dominating, but the interest for cold coffee is growing, especially among young people.

This according to a survey conducted by Kantar on behalf of Löfbergs. 15 per cent of all coffee-drinking Swedes have consumed ice coffee in the past month.

In the ages of 18 to 29, the number is more than twice as big, 36 per cent. It means that cold coffee is more popular than both cappuccino and latte among young people.

“Swedish people have been quite difficult to please when it comes to ice coffee, but it is happening now. Ice coffee has had a real breakthrough and is, without a doubt, here to stay,” says Anders Thorén, Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs.

The survey was conducted in June 2024 by the survey company Kantar with 3,905 Swedish respondents aged 18 to 79, of whom 3,019 are coffee-drinkers.

Ice coffee – the second most common coffee among young people

The hot coffee has had an unwavering place in the hearts of Swedes historically.

But warmer weather and behavioural changes have led to new coffee habits. Ice coffee is gaining popularity, in particular in the age group 18-29, where more than every third coffee-drinker has consumed ice coffee the past month.

Only the classic brewed coffee is consumed by more people in this age group.

“This trend is apparent in our sales of ice coffee, which is significantly increasing. We offer a wide assortment, and we have obviously got it right when it comes to taste as well as design,” says Anders Thorén.
