TUNJA, Boyacá – More than 13,800 coffee lovers from Tunja and the department of Boyacá, including nearly 400 coffee growers, shared a cup of coffee in the Plaza de Bolivar of Tunja, Boyacá.
The massive participation surpassed the 10,000 people the event´s organizers were expecting and broke the Guinness World Record of the world´s largest coffee gathering. To formalize the multitudinous record, the organizers will send the Guinness World Records an official count and photographs of the event.
Beyond this astounding achievement, the coffee gathering granted visibility to the region as a key coffee producing department. Currently, Boyacá counts with more than 12,000 producers and nearly 11,000 hectares grown in coffee.
“The main goal of the event was to transmit to Colombia and the world that Boyacá also produces excellent quality coffee,” stated Jorge Cala, Boyacá´s representative to the National Coffee Growers Committee.
The event was organized by Boyacá´s local government and the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC).
It enjoyed the presence of Juan Valdez –the symbol of Colombian coffee growers throughout the country–, and Professor Yarumo in representation of the FNC´s 1.500 extensionists who support the country´s coffee growers.
