A regional Colombian rum distillery and a coffee from Colombia’s coffee region won recognition Tuesday from the International Taste and Quality Institute.
“Ron Viejo de Caldas” special reserve, aged twelve years, earned three stars — the highest mark possible — at the international organization’s tenth awards, while the San Alberto coffee won the Crystal
Award for having achieved three stars for more than three consecutive years.
The deliciously smooth rum stood out among 74 other products from 12 other countries. Viejo de Caldas was subject to a rigorous exam by 120 chefs and liquor experts.
Viejo de Caldas’ “Carta de Oro” eight-year label also won two stars in the competition.
The awards will help these companies and the distilleries to market their products internationally and expand sales, according to the El Espectador newspaper.
The International Taste and Quality Institute evaluated just over 900 products, of which 21 were Colombian. The Crystal Award won by San Alberto Coffee is the most prestigious award offered by the institute during its annual event, held in Brussels, Belgium.
The Latin American products that had the most success at the awards were beer and other drinks using raw agricultural products such as grapes, cereals, dry fruit, and sugarcane, according to El Espectador.
