The Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Japan invited the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) to present its developments on the protection of Café de Colombia’s intellectual property at the Seminar “Geographical Indications: Sharing Values and Traditions” in Tokyo, Japan.
The FNC noted that Origin Protection benefits producers and distributors of Colombian coffee and guarantees authenticity and compliance with quality standards.
In 2007, the EU recognized Colombian coffee as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Additionally, the recognition of regional Colombian coffees as PGIs is being processed within the framework of the Free Trade Agreement discussions between Colombia and EU.
The FNC was recently invited to Brazil by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Institute of Industrial Property (NIIP) to present its experience on the promotion and protection of Café de Colombia’s origin.
