Since early 2013, as part of its Central American agro-food export programme (see also www.facebook.com/agrofoodca), CBI has coached 12 Honduras coffee companies and cooperatives in expanding their exports of specialty coffees to the European market.
On 23 May 2014, this support at company level was formally expanded with support at sector level, through the signing of a Letter of Commitment between CBI, the Honduran Institute of Coffee (IHCAFE) and FIDE Honduras.
Over the coming two years, the three organisations will work together to develop and implement a national promotion strategy to position the entire Honduran specialty coffee sector in the European market.
The support started with a 2-day workshop on 23 and 24 May in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, in which some 15 representatives of the Honduran coffee sector worked together with IHCAFE, FIDE and CBI experts to lay the foundations of this strategy.
Next July, a second workshop will follow. In June 2014, the Honduran specialty coffee sector will present itself, next to its counterparts from other Central American countries, at the “World of Coffee”, Europe’s leading speciality coffee event, held this year in Rimini, Italy, and organised by the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE).
