LONDON – Parent company of Costa Coffee and Premier Inn confirms its UK operations are now running using 100 per cent renewable power.
Customers visiting thousands of hotels and coffee shops across the UK can now be assured that they are using 100 per cent renewable power, after hospitality giant Whitbread yesterday confirmed all its UK operations are now sourcing electricity from renewable energy projects.
The company, which owns Costa Coffee, Premier Inn, and Beefeater Grill, said that from the start of April all its brands had completed the switch to sourcing their purchased electricity in the UK from renewable sources.
The move means the power used in 68,000 Premier Inn rooms and 2,200 Costa Coffee stores comes from domestic renewable sources.
“As the UK’s largest hospitality brand, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to drive change within the industry which is why we have made this decision for the business,” said James Pitcher, director of sustainability for Whitbread, in a statement.
“Whitbread is committed to minimising its environmental impact and operating is a way that respects people and the planet and we hope this will be a landmark step in helping to set the industry standard.”
The move is the latest in a series of environmental commitments from the company, which in recent years has seen the company reveal how it has installed solar arrays at nearly 90 Premier Inn sites and open the UK’s first ‘zero energy’ coffee shop.
