Coteca 2016: Conference program to cover key topics for coffee, tea and cocoa

HAMBURG, Germany – News from research and industry, and the hot trends in coffee, tea and cocoa will be presented by international experts at this year’s two-day conference at the COTECA Coffee, Tea and Cocoa Global Industry Expo.

Well-known experts have already agreed to participate at COTECA in Hamburg. The global industry expo for coffee, tea and cocoa will be held for the fourth time, from 7 to 9 September 2016 – even bigger and more varied than before.

COTECA has found an ideal partner in the Kaffee Campus of the German Roasters Guild, hosting a wide range of expert presentations and an extensive supporting programme on coffee.

Hot topics to start the conference

The conference will be opened by Albert Scalla, Senior Vice President Intl FCStone, a leading international financial services provider from the United States, with his highly topical presentation on “Coffee and Cocoa: Price Risk Management in two of the most volatile products in the commodity markets”. He shows ways for companies to manage their risks in trade with raw coffee and cocoa, which are subject to major price fluctuations.

Tea subject to changing influences

COTECA is delighted to welcome Dr R.M. Bhagat, Deputy Director/Chief Scientist at the Tocklai Tea Research Institute in Jorhat, India, the world’s largest research centre of its kind. The Institute advises more than 1,000 tea gardens with a total of about 3.5 million ha of land spread over The South Bank, North Bank, Upper Assam, Cachar, Tripura, Dooars, Darjeeling and Terai. Dr Bhagat will speak on “Climate Change in Assam – recent research findings of future sustainability of tea in Assam.”

 Tea trends made in WWW

The new, dynamic opinion leaders in the Internet, the “YouTube Generation”, have been analysed by Martin Sasse, Managing Partner t.lovers, Hamburg, a lawyer, new entrepreneur and sports marketing expert. His presentation on “Spirit of the time – Tea goes YouTube/How internet bloggers and YouTube stars can help to promote tea” presents the prevailing spirit of our times, and explains how the tea sector can learn from it and make good use of it.

Cocoa pure and contaminant-free

Cocoa – Avoiding Contaminants” is at the focus of the workshop by Dr Silke Elwers, Senior Adviser for Cocoa and Agroforestry Systems at ForestFinest Consulting GmbH, Bonn.

The workshop gives an introduction to the various categories of contaminants, that is undesired substances in food, and develops strategies for avoiding them.

Dr Elwers has many years of experience in the cocoa sector, and is concerned among other things with selection of suitable land for cultivation and cocoa varieties in Latin America and South-East Asia.

One of her specialities is counselling to eliminate contaminants in plantations and in the whole of the value chain.

Kaffee Campus with presentations and workshops

The Kaffee Campus run by the German Roasters Guild hosts a range of fascinating presentations at COTECA.

They cover subjects such as sustainability and human rights in coffee growing, quality characteristics in artisan coffee roasting, and contemporary marketing strategies for roasters.

The speakers include Markus Löning, Löning – Human Rights & Responsible Business, Berlin, a former Member of the German Parliament and Human Rights Commissioner of the German Government.

Scientific quality assessment of coffee is explained by coffee researcher Dr Marco Wellinger, Q-Grader and Colleague of Chahan Yeretzian at the Zurich University of Applied Science (ZHAW).

Practical know-how from a related area is presented by Daniel Schneider, Executive Director of the Central Association of German Bakery.
