HAVANA, Cuba – Cuba’s most iconic drink has topped the international list of best-rated coffees, surpassing renowned global classics, according to TasteAtlas, as reported by Directorio Cubano. Cuban coffee beverage claimed the highest rating scoring 4.6 out of 5. The gastronomic guide created its list based on thousands of reviews from users and experts, highlighting the most celebrated coffee varieties worldwide.
The traditional drink from the Island was the only Latin American representative in the top 10, outperforming South Indian filter coffee (4.5), Greek freddo espresso (4.4), and Turin’s cappuccino (4.3).
Its bold flavor, distinctive preparation, and deep cultural roots earned it the top spot. Despite the longstanding global reputation of Italian styles like ristretto, cappuccino, and espresso, Cuban coffee distinguished itself by taking the number one position this year. It’s not merely about taste, it’s the complete experience, including a ritual that embodies cultural identity.
Cuban coffee isn’t just about the beans. Dark-roast coffee is combined with sugar from the start. The first drops are whisked with a spoonful of sugar to create the signature espumita, a thick foam that sits atop the cup. This process results in a short, strong, sweet, and aromatic drink that has become a daily emblem for Cubans at home and abroad. In cities like Miami, ventanitas (coffee windows) showcase this tradition, which has crossed international borders.
While the world celebrates Cuban coffee, enjoying a small cup in Cuba has become almost an act of resilience. Coffee is rationed through the ration booklet, with irregular supplies, frequent delays, and limited amounts. Since the 1980s, Cubans have had to adapt to this diluted version of their beloved drink.
It’s important to note that the ranking evaluates coffee preparation, not the beans themselves.
