PORTLAND, OR USA – The 21 winning farmers of the Brazil Pulped Naturals competition were celebrated by specialty roasters, retailers and importers around the globe with a record breaking auction that set a new high price for both the first place winning coffee and the overall average for a Brazil Cup of Excellence auction.
With a score of over 94 points, the winning coffee was sold for $50.20/lb., beating the previous 2005 record of $49.75/lb. A buying group representing Japan , Australia Taiwan and the US were responsible for setting this new record high price.
The average price for the 21 winning coffees was $11.65/lb., smashing the previous 2012 average price record by $2.85/lb.
This auction has not only shattered records for Brazilian coffee, but it is expected to create an increased global demand for the coffees of these winners and generate worldwide exposure for their communities.
The top five coffees in this year’s competition, for instance, came from the Piatã region, which has not previously garnered significant attention from the world’s premier roasters and importers.

We are thrilled that this 100th celebration event has delivered such great results for Brazil’s deserving farmers and know that going forward the program will continue to discover unknown and underappreciated coffee farmers and allow them to prosper,” explained Susie Spindler, Cup of Excellence Founder and outgoing Alliance for Coffee Excellence Executive Director.
