SAO PAULO, Brazil – In spite of the rainfall registered in mid-July, which limited the coffee harvesting in the north of Paraná and in parts of São Paulo state, activities continued to move at a good pace in Brazil, says Cepea in its latest report. According to data from Cepea, approximately 60% of the volume expected for the 2024/25 season (considering both robusta and arabica) was harvested.
The yield of coffee beans has increased slightly; however, the season may finish with a low volume of high-quality product. It is worth noting, on the other hand, that the dry weather has been favoring both the drying and the final ripening of the coffee beans.
As for robusta, activities are close to the end in Espírito Santo (between 10% and 20% of the total is left to be harvested). Considering arabica, the volume harvested is close to half of the total – data from Cepea.
The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the type 6 robusta coffee rose 4.2% in the partial of this month (until July 15), hitting BRL 1,292.34 per 60-kilo bag on July 12, a new record of Cepea series, which started in 2001, in real terms (IGP-DI June 2024). On July 15, the Index closed at BRL 1,273.51/bag.
The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the arabica coffee type 6, delivered in São Paulo, closed at BRL 1,443.05 per 60-kilo bag on July 15, moving up 5.3% from June 28 to July 15.
In the 2023/24 crop-year (from July/23 to June/24), exports hit the record of 47.3 million 60-kg bags, for an increase of 32.7% against the volume verified in the season before (2022/23), of 35.63 million bags – data from Cecafé.
The volume shipped in the 2023/24 crop surpassed in 3.6% the record registered up until then, in the 2020/21 season, when 45.67 million bags were exported by Brazil, also according to Cecafé. The revenue in 2023/24 was also a record, of USD 9.8 billion, 20.7% more than in the 2022/23 season.
The good performance of Brazilian coffee shipments is directly related to the lower availability of the product from other origins, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, especially of robusta.
