SAO PAULO, Brazil – After moving up significantly in April and decreasing in early May, both domestic and international prices of Arabica and Robusta coffee were registering some adjustments at the end of the first fortnight of May, seeking for a direction, says CEPEA in its latest report. Still, in the partial of this month (up to May 15), prices for both varieties have decreased.
As for arabica, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the type 6, delivered in São Paulo, closed at BRL 1,124.60 per 60-kilo bag on May 15, for a decrease of 9.88% in the partial of this month (between April 30 and May 15). Concerning robusta coffee, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the type 6 closed at BRL 945.72 per 60-kilo bag on May 15, downing 16.65% in the partial of May.
Abroad, futures were also facing adjustments. Data regarding supply and initial conditions of the crop in Vietnam and of the harvest in Brazil were driving the market and may continue to affect international trends. In general, as the harvest progresses in Brazil, the sector may have eyes on the crops development.
For the time being, the arabica harvest was still at the beginning in the middle of May.
In most areas, the volume harvested was up to 10% of the total. According to Cepea collaborators, activities are more advanced (between 5% and 10%) in the regions of Paulista (Garça), Zona da Mata in Minas Gerais and Northwest of Paraná. In general, players have reported low productivity.
As for robusta, the harvest in Rondônia and in EspÃrito Santo states was more advanced compared to activities for arabica, as usual. The scenario of low quality for the first batches was also observed.
