LONDON, UK — Multinational commercial catering and food service company, Elior has announced in a press release that its partnership with sustainable biofuel producer Bio-bean has saved 36 tonnes of coffee waste from going to landfill.
The partnership began in 2016, when waste coffee grounds started to be collected from various company’s sites across the UK. Once collected, the waste coffee is turned into Coffee Logs to then be used in wood burners, stoves and open fires.
So far, Elior and Bio-bean have produced 11,500 logs. The logs are able to burn for 20% longer and hotter than kiln-dried wood and the recycling of the coffee waste generates 80% less emissions than if it were to go to landfill.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) manager of Elior, Charlotte Wright has said, “This is just the beginning, we plan on getting more sites involved. CSR is at the heart of everything we do. We want to work with partners and like-minded businesses to effect real change and Bio-bean are definitely doing that.”
National supply chain manager of Bio-bean, Julie Porter said on the partnership, “Through encouraging clients to recycle their waste coffee responsibly, Elior is helping them to reduce their carbon footprint and cut down on waste disposal costs. We’ve already seen great success and look forward to an increasing cluster of Elior clients coming on board!”
