LONDON, UK – If you work 9 to 5, it’s pretty much a given that you simply can’t make it through to midday without sitting over your keyboard with a steaming cup of coffee.
Well, now someone has made the morning rush to shovel down your breakfast and grab a cuppa on-the-go much easier – by creating spreadable coffee that you can slather on your toast.
That’s right, delicious coffee you can eat by the spoonful.
The world’s first ‘espresso spread’ is being launched by Selfridges to celebrate UK Coffee Week, and make the morning struggle a little more bearable for early rising Londoners.
So does it actually work as a substitute for a morning espresso?
We got our hands on a jar of the stuff and tried it as an early morning wake-up call on our toast.
Flat Brew, the creators of the spread, say they achieved the spreadable coffee by refining dark-roasted Arabica coffee beans, butter, sugar and cream to deliver a deliciously indulgent breakfast treat.
The texture of the spread smooth and similar to peanut butter, and although the alarmingly dark colour takes some getting used to, the taste is deliciously sweet – more like a coffee-infused Nutella than a bitter espresso shot.
Given the copious amounts of butter and sugar, this probably isn’t one for the clean eating brigade, nor is it great if you’re on a diet kick and are thinking of eating it straight from the jar – there are a whopping 91 calories in a 20 gram serving.
However, if you love coffee and are planning on burning the midnight oil – this might just be the thing to keep you going.
The coffee spread in espresso costs £5.99 for a 285g jar and is launching exclusively at Selfridges, Oxford Street, for UK Coffee Week (10 -16 April).
