BOGOTA, Colombia – Under the motto “Colombia, Land of Diversity,” the 9th edition of the International Specialty Coffee Expo, ExpoEspeciales CafĂ© de Colombia 2016, which will take place from October 5 to 8, is already around the corner.
The number of domestic and foreign visitors, the high level of its academic agenda and the possibility of making business contacts at the highest level, with the help of business matchmaking forums, have contributed to position this Expo as a must-see event in the global coffee industry.
ExpoEspeciales Café de Colombia has consolidated as the most important specialty coffee expo in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year, over 100 exhibitors representing the different links of the coffee production and commercial chain are expected.
Within the framework of the Expo, the 11th Colombian Barista Championship and the 6th National Cup Tasters Championship will also take place; events of great tradition which confirm growth of the specialty coffee industry and sophistication of consumption.
The Expo is organized by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) and Café de Colombia as part of the strategy to improve profitability of coffee farmers, by promoting production of coffees of the highest quality from different regions of Colombia.
This year, the main innovation at ExpoEspeciales will be the awards ceremony and live auction of winning coffees of the first national quality competition “Colombia, Land of Diversity”.
The call for participation was open in two main categories: Small and Big Lots. In the Small Lots category (500-2,000 kg), a coffee per farm or producer was able to participate; the following best sensory attributes or features will be recognized individually:
- Acidity
- Body
- Mildness
- Balance
- Exotic
In the Big Lots category (25,000-27,500 kg), a coffee per producer or coffee-growing association was able to participate, and there will be a single distinction to the best Estate coffee.
In addition, the first five lots of each group (30 in total) will take part in the live auction to domestic and international bidders to be held within the framework of ExpoEspeciales 2016. Basic prices of the auction will be US$ 5 per pound for Small Lots and US$ 2 per pound for Big Lots.
This first national contest capitalizes on the FNC’s wide experience to organize world-class competitions.
