AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – On 7 September it was ‘Tag des Kaffees’ (the Day of Coffee) in Germany. Of all Europeans the Germans drink the most coffee: on average 149 liter per person last year! Germany is therefore the biggest and most important market for coffee sales in Europe.
The conditions under which the coffee is produced becomes more and more important too.
“The demand for sustainably produced coffee is increasing in Germany, and this trend is only expected to grow in the coming years”, ascertains Han de Groot, Executive Director at UTZ Certified, “Accordingly, it is of course important to establish reliable sources of sustainably certified coffee beans for the German market”.
UTZ Certified is currently active in 23 producing countries and is further expanding its sustainability program for coffee. By 2020 50% of global coffee production should be sustainable through the joint efforts of sustainability programs. To achieve this goal, UTZ is active on the international (coffee) markets, of which Germany is an important one.
