MILAN, Italy – On March 11, Google revealed a doodle commemorating the addition of “flat white” to the Oxford dictionary. Titled Celebrating the Flat White, the doodle replaced the iconic Google logo on its homepage. A flat white coffee is a beloved espresso-based drink renowned for its smooth texture and robust flavor.
Originating from Australia and New Zealand, it is crafted by pouring steamed milk over a shot of espresso, resulting in a creamy beverage with a bold coffee taste.
Google celebrates the flat white
While the precise origins of the flat white are subject to debate, it is thought to have emerged in the 1980s. Its name may derive from the flat layer of microfoam that blankets the coffee, lending it a velvety appearance.
The flat white gained global popularity in the 2000s and has since then become a classic in coffee culture worldwide. Appreciated for its simple yet refined taste and texture, it appeals to coffee lovers seeking a harmonious blend of espresso strength and milk creaminess.
This is certainly not the first time Google decided to pay homage to the world of coffee. On June 6 2022, Google celebrated the 171st birthday of Angelo Moriondo, who is widely considered as the inventor of espresso machines.
The search engine has honoured Moriondo with an artistic Doodle by guest artist Olivia, which is painted with coffee.
