PORTSMOUTH, Va., U.S.– Hills Bros. Coffee will debut the first certified 100 percent compostable single-serve coffee in the United States on Earth Day in Chicago.

Hills Bros. Coffee will be offering fresh brewed coffee, memorabilia and single-serving samples at four separate sponsored Earth Day events in Chicago, from Metra commuter platforms on Earth Day morning, to a “Clean Up the Park” event on Saturday, and on Sunday, a 10K race in Morton Arboretum and “Party for the Planet” at the Brookfield Zoo.

“In 2014 alone, more than 10 billion plastic single-serve cups were thrown into landfills,” said Sarah Cunningham, senior marketing manager of Hills Bros.® coffee.  “Our new coffee pods are certified 100% compostable and designed to go back to the land – not the landfill.

“We can’t think of a better day to introduce our Hills Bros. Brew & Renew campaign or a better place than Chicago to unveil the innovative PURPOD100™ coffee pod.”

Certification by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) means the new PURPOD100™ single serve coffee pod product will break down in less than 84 days in municipal composting facilities, quickly and safely returning the product to the soil.  (http://www.mzb-usa.com/compostability/)

Throughout the weekend, brewed Hills Bros. pods and certified compostable paper cups will be collected by The Resource Center, a commercial composter based in Chicago, to be made into compost for use at City Farm and other urban farming projects.  Hills Bros. ® coffee is one of the first coffee brands in the country to introduce certified 100% compostable pods, PURPOD100™.

Hills Bros. 100% certified compostable single-serve coffee pods will be available for purchase at the end of April at local retailers Jewel, Copps, Pick ‘n Save, Woodman’s and Mariano’s as well as online at shopmzb.com and Amazon.com. Hills Bros. is owned by Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA, one of the country’s largest coffee roasters.
