LONDON – The International Coffee Organization (ICO) is now accepting applications for its Internship Programme at its headquarters in London.
Interns should be at graduate or post-graduate level and should have an interest in international development, sustainability, economics, statistics or another subject of topical interest in this field.
Internships are normally offered for periods of three to six months. The programme is designed primarily for students undertaking research into the activities of the Organization, specifically in the areas of statistics, market analysis, and sustainability.
The programme should be specified in the student’s application and approved in writing by the Organization.
Failure to pursue the agreed programme may lead to the suspension of the internship.
Successful applicants will also be required to assist with basic office functions including statistical data entry, coffee news reports, document editing, and other duties as needed.
Interns will be encouraged to assist and advise ICO staff on methods for increasing the efficiency and quality of the work of the Organization. Subject to regular attendance, a letter confirming the student’s completion of the internship will be issued at the end of the programme.
Interns will be given access to computers, the ICO’s library and various other facilities at the ICO. They will be required to report to an officer of the ICO in terms of daily operational responsibilities.
Interns will constantly interact with ICO staff and, if appropriate, will be able to observe the proceedings of ICO meetings or committees during the period of their stay, with the approval of an officer of the ICO. However, all interns will attend ICO meetings in their personal capacity only.
Interns are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a matter compatible with an international, diplomatic organization.
Applicants should have a working knowledge of at least two of the ICO’s official languages (English, French, Spanish and Portuguese).
The acceptance of interns to the ICO’s programme is subject to the clear understanding that all internships are unpaid and interns must pay their own travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.
Interns are also responsible for making their own insurance arrangements with regard to medical, travel or other emergencies.
Applications must be accompanied by a written statement to this effect from the applicant.
Interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary passport and visa or other documents for entering the United Kingdom. The ICO is not able to assist interns with obtaining visas or relevant permissions from the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office or Home Office to fulfil their duties in the UK.
Interested applicants should send a letter by email to Patricia Hurtado <hurtado@ico.org>, ICO Administration, enclosing a curriculum vitae of no more than 2 pages with the subject line: “ICO Internship Programme: [Name of Applicant].” The letter should specify what the individual aims to accomplish by becoming an intern at the ICO and what his or her areas of interest are in the world of coffee and international development.
