TRIESTE – The fourth academic year of the University Inter Athenaeum Master Degree of 2nd level in Coffee Economics and Science was opened on January 13th by an inaugural ceremony.

The Master is promoted and organized by a group of leading partners in the education field: the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, the Ernesto Illy Foundation, the University of Coffee (illycaffè), the Sissa – International Superior School of Advanced Studies of Trieste, the Association of Molecular Biomedicine (Science Park Area – Trieste) and the District of coffee of Trieste (Trieste Coffee Cluster).

The project is supported by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Udine e Pordenone (CRUP) and by Fondazione CRTrieste as well.

“The topics the master is based on are the three coffee virtues – coffee and pleasure, coffee and sustainability, coffee and health – together with culture, creativity and science from the bean to the cup – said Andrea Illy, chairman and CEO of illycaffè.

“I’m proud of our company being the sponsor and mentor of this initiative that adds value to whole the supply chain, by raising the professional level in the coffee world. It’s not by chance that the master takes place in Trieste, the global capital of coffee”.

The main purpose of this Master is to offer an in-depth preparation to all graduates who are interested in working in the world of coffee and, in general, in the agro-alimentary field.

The teaching program develops into three major areas: economical-administrative, biological-agronomic and technological.

From coffee cultivation to logistics, from industrial production process to catering and retail: each step of the coffee production cycle is explained in deep and from the point of view of an ethical and sustainable approach, while the pursuit of quality is the unifying element.

The Master Degree in Coffee Economics and Science, head up by Furio Suggi Liverani, is unique of its kind in the world: it has a strong international approach and it confirms Trieste as the global cultural hub of coffee.

The academic staff comes from excellence centers, both in Italy and abroad, such as the University of Wageningen, the University of São Paulo, the University of Udine, the University of Trieste, the MIB School of Management, the University of Coffee.

The 17 students of this academic year – graduates in Economics, Engineering, Sciences, Agriculture and similar fields – come from 11 countries: Brazil, Burundi, Columbia, Cina, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Italy, Mexico and United States.

The 400 hours of lessons will be at illycaffè headquarters, beginning with Monday, January 13 till June 6. The study program will end at the half of September with a thesis dissertation.

Some scholarships are available this year as well: eight of them will be paid by the Ernesto Illy Foundation (seven totals and one partial) to as many worthy students coming from coffee producing countries; one scholarship by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Udine e Pordenone (CRUP) to a student coming from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and one scholarship by Fondazione CRTrieste to a local student
